Coastal Drive
Drive to Hermanus, the Riveira of the Cape, via Sir Lowry’s pass and past valleys of fruit orchards. Optional wine tasting at the prestigious Hamilton Russel Wine Estate in the beautiful Hemel and Aarde (heaven and earth) Valley.
In Hermanus stroll along the cliff path. Search the ancient dune pathways for remnants of “Bushmen” beads, tiny ostrich egg shell beads, fashioned by Khoisan women almost 20 000 years ago. The sea is always angry here as it pounds against the low cliffs and throws up spectacular waves. There is a charming old fishing harbour, and a quaint whale museum, during whale season (June – November) the Southern Right whale comes to this bay to mate and calve. The surrounding cliffs make Hermanus one of the worlds’ premier land-based whale-watching destinations. A well chosen setting with the Cape Overberg Mountains dipping into the sea, rich with Cape “fynbos” flora. Return to Cape Town via Kleinmond and a spectacular coastal drive.
